Number Sums

brain

Make every row and column add up

Number Sums is a logic puzzle on a grid of numbers. Each row and each column has a target sum written at its edge, and you finish a level when every one of them is matched. The work is deciding which numbers count and which do not.

Controls

Click, or tap on a phone. The game has two modes: Select, to mark a cell that belongs in the sum, and Remove, to strike out a cell that does not.

Where to start a grid

Do not start in the middle. Start where the arithmetic leaves no choice:

A row whose target equals all its numbers added together — every cell in it counts, so select them all. A target that only one combination can reach — if a row needs 9 and holds 9, 4 and 6, only the 9 on its own adds up (4 + 6 makes 10), so the 9 stays and the other two go. A number bigger than its row's target can never be part of it, so remove it straight away.

Every cell you settle in a row also settles it in a column, so one forced row often unlocks the next. When nothing is forced, look at the column that crosses the cell you are unsure about.

How much there is

The game lists 5,000 levels, getting larger as you go. It is a long game to play in short sessions.

Facts on this page come from the game's own description and its GamePix page. The solving advice is ours.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Number Sums?
Each row and column shows a target sum at its edge. Use Select to mark the numbers that count and Remove to strike out the ones that do not, until every row and column adds up to its target.
Where should I start?
Where there is no choice: a row whose target equals all its numbers, a target only one combination can reach, or a number larger than its row's target, which can never count.
How many levels are there?
The game lists 5,000 levels, getting larger as you go.
Can I play it in the browser?
Yes, with a mouse click or a tap on a phone. Nothing to download and no account needed. It suits a tall screen.
What is the difference between Select and Remove?
Select marks a cell that belongs in its row and column sums. Remove strikes out a cell that does not count. Removing what cannot fit is often the quickest way into a hard grid.
