What 1 in 8 Billion is
1 in 8 Billion (often shortened to 1in8b) is a free life simulation that runs in a web browser. You are born as one of the babies arriving on Earth right now, in a country, family and income bracket drawn from real birth statistics, and you follow that one person until they die. You don't pick where you are born. The most likely draws are India, China, Nigeria, Pakistan and Indonesia, simply because that is where the most babies are born: India alone accounts for about one birth in six.
It was released on October 5, 2026 by a solo operator who goes by Jin's Earth, who says the game is written with AI (Anthropic's Claude) and checked by hand. By its third week it was searched most in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand, often under local names such as 80億分之一.
How a life plays
A life opens with a birth registration card: your name, country and region, your family's income quintile, your parents' ages and jobs, your religion, your country's life expectancy and your chance of dying before age five. Beside it are four other babies born in the same second somewhere else, and their lives run alongside yours on the same statistics, so at every age you can see how they are doing.
Time then runs on its own. You choose how long a full life should take, about 30 minutes, an hour or an hour and a half, and you can pause or speed it up to 16×. From age six you choose a focus for each year, such as helping at home, playing with friends, exercise or a hobby, and each shows which of the four meters it moves: health, happiness, knowledge and relationships. Bigger decisions interrupt the clock: what a two-year-old does first, which hobby to take up, and later school, work, love, moving abroad and medical care.
At ages 5, 15, 30, 50 and 70 the game stops and asks one reflective question, which you can answer in a line of text or skip. If making choices is too much, Auto mode plays the life for you and you just watch.
What we saw in our first life
Our first draw was a girl born in rural eastern Guinea into the second-poorest fifth of families, with a life expectancy of 62.7 years and an 8.7% chance of dying before her fifth birthday. The game compared that with a baby born the same day in the country our browser suggested, China: 0.6%.
By age six she was not in school, because the school was far away and her family needed help at home, and her occupation read working child. The life record fills up with small scenes, such as fetching water before sunrise or playing football with a ball of plastic bags, and many of them carry a one-line statistic with its source, for example how many children of primary-school age are out of school worldwide, from UNESCO. That pairing of a scene with a cited number is what the game is really about.
Where the numbers come from
Births, life expectancy and fertility come from the UN World Population Prospects 2024, with child mortality, income, inequality, schooling, health spending and other measures from the UN, World Bank, WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF and similar sources. The age at death is drawn year by year from the country's life tables, so a life can end in infancy or run far past the average. Some missing values are estimated from regional averages, and the game says so.
Tips
Choices shift the odds, they don't decide the outcome. The game says it plainly, and it is hard to escape the statistics of the country you were born in. In a player discussion on Tildes, one player noted that the model rewards education and healthy habits most reliably.
Skip early childhood at 8× or faster. The first years have few decisions, and the game itself suggests speeding through them.
Keep playing in the same browser. Lives are saved in the browser, not in an account. Closing the tab doesn't end a life; opening the site again in the same browser picks it up. To move lives to another device, use the code from 'Move my lives'.
Use Auto mode when you just want to see a life. It is the quickest way to compare several countries.
Which site is the official one
The only official address is 1in8b.life. Within days of the game taking off, copycat sites registered similar names. The developer's FAQ names 1in8b.app, 1in8b.live, 1in8b.net, 1in8bn.com, 1in8billion.app and in8b.com as having nothing to do with the game.
