What Slow Roads is

Slow Roads is an endless driving game that runs in a web browser. There is no race, no timer and no destination: a road is generated in front of you as you go, with hills, forests, lakes and walls built around it, and you simply keep driving for as long as you like.

It is made by a solo developer who goes by anslo, now publishing as Topograph Interactive. The browser version came out in October 2022, and the developer has described its first location as a love letter to the rolling hills of England's Peak District. A paid Steam edition followed on September 23, 2026, which is why searches for the game roughly doubled in September. The browser version is still free and has no ads.

How it plays

You drive with W, A, S and D (or a controller), boost with Left Shift and pull the handbrake with Space. If you would rather watch, the bar at the bottom offers three assist modes: Autodrive steers and controls the speed, Autosteer only steers, and Autospeed only holds the speed while you steer. F switches assistance on and off and G cycles between the modes.

Three menus change the drive while you are moving. World picks the location and the road style: the free version has the green Hills and an alien Off-World landscape, and four road styles from Straight through Casual and Normal to Winding. Style sets one of four seasons, one of four times of day (sunrise, day, sunset, night) and clear or cloudy weather. Vehicle swaps between a coupe, a tour bus and a motorbike, and for the two four-wheelers lets you choose all-wheel, front-wheel or rear-wheel drive.

Every world comes from a seed, and the game shows a short code for the road you are on. The code also sits in the page address, so a link to it brings someone else to the same stretch of road.

What we saw on our drive

We started on Hills with the Normal road style and the seed 80f9fe6a. The game showed the code A2-80f9fe6a, and as we changed settings the code changed with them: switching to Off-World turned the leading A into an O, and stepping through the road styles changed the digit from 0 for Straight to 3 for Winding. The page address kept a running distance, for example @0.19 after the first couple of hundred metres.

Our coupe opened on a two-lane road between a wooden fence and a drystone wall. On Autodrive it settled at around 60 km/h and took the bends on its own. We then switched the season to winter and the time to sunset: the fields turned to snow, the sky went pink and the headlights came on. Because we were on Autospeed at that moment, nobody was steering, and we found the car off the tarmac in the snow. The R key resets the car, and Autodrive then takes over again.

Our test browser had no graphics acceleration, and the game said so straight away with a low performance notice and a hint to lower the graphics settings. It still ran, just slowly. On a normal computer with hardware acceleration turned on it is far smoother.

Tips

Turn on hardware acceleration first. The game itself asks for it, and without it everything runs at a crawl. If it still stutters, lower the view distance, detail and render scale in the graphics settings.

Pick the assist mode on purpose. Autodrive is the hands-off mode. Autospeed leaves the steering to you, so it is easy to wander off the road if you look away, while Autosteer lets you set the pace on a winding road.

Save the road you like. Copy the world code from the World menu, or keep the page address, to come back to the same landscape later.

Hide the interface for a clean view. U toggles the interface, C changes the camera and T toggles the cinematic camera.

Free browser version or Steam

The browser game at slowroads.io is the full original and costs nothing. The Steam edition is the developer's paid release: it adds more locations, starting with a California coast, configurable traffic and achievements, and the Steam page says the free web version will stay available. Buying it on Steam is the way to support the developer, since the browser version carries no ads.

Which site is the official one

The official address is slowroads.io, the same site that links to the developer's Steam page and Discord. Searches for slow roads unblocked lead to many copies on school-unblock sites and template pages, and none of them are run by the developer. If slowroads.io is blocked on your network, the Steam demo or Steam edition is the other official way to play.

Frequently asked questions

Is Slow Roads free?
Yes. The browser version at slowroads.io is free, has no ads and needs no account. There is also a paid Steam edition with extra locations and features, and the developer says the free web version will stay available.
What are the Slow Roads controls?
W, A, S and D drive and steer, Left Shift boosts, Space is the handbrake and R resets the car onto the road. F toggles the driving assist, G cycles its mode, H switches the headlights, C changes the camera and U hides the interface. All of them can be remapped in the settings.
Can Slow Roads drive by itself?
Yes. Autodrive steers and controls the speed for you. Autosteer only steers and Autospeed only holds the speed, so you can hand over just one half of the driving.
Can I go back to the same road?
Yes. Each world is built from a seed, and the World menu shows a short code for it that you can copy. The same code is kept in the page address, so a saved link opens the same road again.
Is Slow Roads unblocked on other sites the real game?
Those copies are not run by the developer. The official browser game is at slowroads.io, and the other official route is the Steam demo or Steam edition published by Topograph Interactive.
